American photographer and filmaker, born New York 1890; student of Lewis Hine (1874-1940) at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School; exhibtied by Steiglitz at the 291 gallery, and published in 'Camera Work'; Strand was one of the founders of the 'Photo League'; produced or collaborated on a number of motion pistures in 1the 1920s and 1930s; in 1949 moved to Orgeval, France where he lived for rerest of his life.
