The Hunslet Engine Company is a locomotive-building company founded in 1864 at Jack Lane, Hunslet, Leeds, by John Towlerton Leather, a civil engineering contractor, who appointed James Campbell as his Works Manager. In 1902 the company was reorganised as a private limited company, with the name Hunslet Engine Company Ltd. - although it was still a family business. On 9th January 1989, Hunslet split its production in two, with the Hunslet GMT concentrating on below ground locomotives and Hunslet Barclay producing all surface level locomotives. The Hunslet Engine Company is now a part of the LH Group of Companies and continues to trade from an address in Leeds. It also claims ownership of "the intellectual property and design rights to the following British locomotive names: Andrew Barclay, Avonside Engine Company, North British Locomotive Company, Greenwood and Batley, Hudswell Clarke, John Fowler & Co., Kerr Stuart, Kitson & Co. and Manning Wardle".
