The company was formed in 1968 to develop optical digital image sensors. The company's first managing director was Peter J.W. Noble. In 1972 the company was acquired by Muirhead and Company, and in 2003 the company was acquired by Thales SA. It continued to manufacture and supply optoelectronic components, ultrasonic sensors and vision based measurement systems to the defence, telecommunication and steel industries. From 2003-2006 the business was known as Thales Optronics (Taunton) Ltd-Photomatrix Division.
