Suffered from stones from childhood, family and friends were poor and could not afford surgery and had to appeal to charitable cases; admitted as an In-patient to St Thomas' Hospital, Southwark; underwent surgery and the surgeons removed an extraordinary stone measuring eight inches in circumference,'the case was deemed so singular, that a portrait of the man was engraved with an exact representation of the stone.'
