Queen Victorias private secretary 1895-1901. On the accession of Edward VII he worked for his cousing the Duke of York.On the accesion of George V in 1910 he became privy councillor. He became baron Stamfordham in 1911. It was his suggestion during WW1 for the royal family to change their name to Windsor.
