Cycle racing enthusiast; bicycle manufacturer representative; later built own bicycles in Springfield, Massachusetts; interest in motorized pacing bicycle built by Oscar Hedstrom: two men formed Hendee Manufacturing Company; 1912 - renamed to the Indian Motocycle Company: the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer. After Ford's Model T introduction sales dropped dramatically. 1916 - Hendee retires from company.
