The Bow Street Runners have been called London's first professional police force. 1749 - founded by the author Henry Fielding, with eight 'runners'. Formally attached to Bow Street magistrates office and were paid by the magistrate with funds from central government. Their activities ceased officially with the formation of the Metropolitan Police in 1829.
