Henry Pease 1807 - 1881

born in:
Darlington, Darlington, England, United Kingdom

Henry Pease, the fifth son of Edward Pease (1767–1858), was born in Darlington in 1807. He followed his father's enthusiasm for railways, eventually becoming a prominent railway company promoter. His principal achievement was the opening, in 1861, of the line across Stainmoor, the summit of which was 1374 feet above sea level. After the Stockton and Darlington Railway was taken over by North Eastern Railway, in the 1860s, Pease became vice-chairman of the board and in that position he presided over the railway jubilee held at Darlington on 27 September 1875. Pease died on the 30 May, 1881.
