Earl William 'Madman' Muntz (1914-1987), business man and engineer, began selling monochrome television receivers in 1947; a self-taught engineer he reverse engineered existing recivers, reducing them to the minimum required electronics; the recievers were the first to sell in the United States for under a $100s; sales were successful until the introduction of colour receivers; Muntz TV Inc. filed for bankruptcy in 1959.
