Born 1826 at Wilby, Yorkshire. Dent studied at Trinity College Cambridge and was an MP for Knaresborough and Scarborough. He was appointed Director of the North Eastern Railway Company in 1879, becoming Chairman in 1880, a post he held until his death in 1894.
