Matthew White Ridley studied at Harrow and Oxford beginning his political career shortly after graduating. He became Conservative MP for Northumberland in 1868. He was Under-Secretary at the Home Office in 1880 and Financial Secretary to the Treasury in 1885/6. He became MP for Blackpool 1887-1900 and Home Secretary 1895-1900. He joined the North Eastern Railway Board in 188 and was Chairman from 1902-1904.
