John Powles Cheyne 1826 - 1902

1848-49 - accompanied Sir James Clark Ross in his search for the lost Franklin expedition (Enterprise and Investigator); 1861 - produced series of stereoscope views of the Franklin relics brought back to England by Sir Leopold McClintock in 1859; 1870 - retired from navy; 1880s - embarked on a transatlantic lecture tour with entertainments of magic lantern slides, for example, 'The Search for Sir John Franklin', to raise funds to reach the North Pole by balloon, (plans later abandoned),
