Ornithologist and natural history photographer, born Halifax, West Yorkshire; served with British Army during second world war, 1940-1946; moved to Australia 1953, studying and photographing native birds; returned to England to study at Durham for doctorate; then moved to Christchurch, New Zealand as reader in zoology at Canterbury University, until 1987; led several expeditions to study wildlife on New Zealand's sub-antarctic islands.
