1544 - products of Roman lead working discovered in the area of the caves. 1935 - diving of the caves first attempted by a team led by Graham Balcombe. 1949 - diver Gordon Marriott dies returning from Chamber Nine. 1954-7 - archaeological excavations at Hole Ground, discovered the foundations of a 1st century hut and Iron Age pottery. 1973 - after being purchased by Madame Tussards, the caves (along with the Wookey Hole Paper Mill) opened as a tourist attraction. 2009 - Carole Bohanan employed as Carla Calamity, the Witch of Wookey Hole, on a wage of £50,000.
