1887 - the Imperial Institute, which was built to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. 1956 - following a decision to demolish the Imperial Institute, considerable opposition from the Royal Fine Arts Commission resulted in the retention of the central tower. 1966-1968 - work was carried out to enable the central tower to stand on its own. 1968 - the Queen's Tower becomes the custody of Imperial College.
