1848 - following the Revolution of 1848, the second republic declared, adopting the motto Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. 1851 - Louis-Napoléon, on the night between 1—2 December dissolved the Chamber, re-established universal suffrage, had all the party leaders arrested, and summoned a new assembly to prolong his term of office for ten years.
