1834 - entered the Royal Academy Schools. 1835 - first exhibited in the Royal Academy. 1889 - produced drawings for the (never created) sculpture for Blackfriars Bridge. 1837 - exhibited at the New Watercolour Society, later the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, being elected a member in that year. 1861 - resigned from the New Watercolour Society over financial mismanagement, but returned after failing to win election to the Old Watercolour Society. 1840 - drew the portrait of the queen for the new penny black stamp. 1851 - appointed ‘instructor of historical painting to the royal family’. 1898 - retired from active membership of the New Watercolour Society.
