1833 - founded by William Brockedon, artist and inventor, as a society for artists to hold monthly meetings (“conversazione”) and exhibitions. 1837 - Turner’s painting of Bamborough Castle was exhibited there and pronounced to be “one of the finest watercolour-drawings in the world." 1852 - membership was increased from a limit of 100 to 125. 1887 - female members were admitted.
