Lithographer and photographer; born Quebec, 1821, moving to New York around 1836; worked as illustrator before starting own lithography business, Sarony & Major, in 1843; became Sarony & Company from 1853 to 1857, then Sarony, Major & Knapp from 1857 to 1863; Sarony left company in 1863 to establish photographic studio in Union Square, New York, specialising in celebratory portraits; brother Oliver François Xavier Sarony (d 1879) also a photographer, active in England.
