1872 - William Bow and John McLachlan established the firm at Abbotsinch, Renfrewshire, Scotland. 1894 - started advertising engines under the Thistle name. 1900 - took over the yard of J. McArthur and Co, and built a reputation for building tugs. The firm was incorporated as Bow McLachlan & Co Ltd
