Hammerschmidt worked as a professional photographer in Berlin. In 1860, he opened a shop in Cairo, Egypt, that sold photographs and photographic materials. Hammerschmidt was associated with the photographic studio "Braun Brothers" also in Egypt. In 1869, Hammerschmidt photographed the interior of Saint Sepulchre in Jerusalem, Palestine.
