Daguerreotypist, photographer, printer, bookseller; born Leicester 1819; took control of family printing business in 1841; established Leicester's first photographic studio at Bible & Crown Works, 36 Market Place, Leicester, in 1844 in partnership with Joseph Jenkins Hewitt; Browne became sole proprietor in 1848; still active at Bible & Crown until 1876 when retired from photography; continued to trade as a dealer in fine art until his death in 1899
