1894 - Joseph L. Thomson and Sons became a limited liability company. 1900 - built almost exclusively for the transatlantic trades. 1901 - Sir James Marr became chairman and managing Director of the yard. 1946 - took over John Crown and Sons. 1954 - became a subsidiary of Sunderland Shipbuilding, Dry Dock and Engineering Co. Ltd. 1961 - merged into the Doxford and Sunderland Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Limited.
