Formed Adie & Son - scientific instrument maker partnership business with eldest son.

In 1821, Alexander designed and manufactured the Eidograph - improved Pantograph - for William Wallace, professor of mathematics at the University of Edinburgh.

Adie's interest in weather led him to design, and subsequently patent, in December 1818, his Sympiesometer or ‘new air barometer’.
