1824 - established by William Laird to manufacture boilers. 1828 - joined by his son, John, William moved into shipbuilding. 1850s - the yard was acquired by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board for Birkenhead Docks forcing the shipyard to move to a new site between Monks Ferry and Tranmere Pool. 1855 - new iron mortar boats launched. 1860 - name changed to John Laird, Sons and Co.
