1828 - established as an engineering business. 1838 - John Scott Russell was appointed General Manager. 1840 - after winning a contract from the Royal Mail Steam Packet, moved into ship building. 1870 - started long contract to build P&O liners. 1888 - founder James Caird, died. His sons immediately made the company a limited liability one.
