1863 - apprenticed as an engineer, under his father, at the Watling Works, Stony Stratford. 1869 - started working in the management of the Watling Works. 1882 - elected a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. 1889 - took honours at the Paris Exhibition for his design of steamers for the London Metropolitan Fire Brigade. 1895 - purchased Mansfield, a large property in Stony Stratford.
