Architect and photographic pioneer; Born Inverness he moved south to York in the early 1840s, helping to repair the fire damage to the Minister; remained, living and working there as an architect for the rest of his life; studied photography under William Henry Fox Talbot, earleist photo dating to 1848, photographing many of his own buildings; donated extensive collection to the Royal Photographic Collection in 1897
