Documentary and advertising photographer; born Paris 1928, emigrated with family to US in 1939; studied photography and filmmaking at Los Angeles City College and the New School for Social Research; worked as photographer for US Army in early 1950s; joined Magnum Photos in 1953; awarded The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship (HonFRPS) in 2002; awarded International Center for Photography's Infinity Award, Lifetime Achievement category, 2011.
