Brian R. Maddison was born in 1946 and started at British Railways' District Engineer’s Office in Peterborough in 1964. He then held various posts at the civil engineers' offices at King's Cross, Leicester, and Nottingham. In 1968, he began working for the British Rail Diving team in Derby. He moved to work at Bridgeway Consulting, a railway contracting company in 1995.
