R. Monty Hiatt was born in 1943. He studied at the University of Exeter gaining a BSc in Mathematics and an MSc in Applied Mathematics, he became a British Rail Management Trainee in 1965. He went to work in British Rail Operational Research from 1967-1997, including being appointed as Head of Operational Research in 1974. From 1998 onwards he worked as railway performance manager consultant.
