British

A liberal, anti-Fascist, and populist photojournalism magazine, widely regarded as the UK equivalent to Life Magazine. Though initially achieving weekly sales of 1,700,000, by the time it closed in 1957 its circulation declined to less than 600,000 copies/week. Its editors included Stefan Lorant and Tom Hopkinson, and well known photographers, including Bert Hardy, Kurt Hutton, Felix H. Mann, Francis Reiss, Thurston Hopkins, John Chillingworth, Grace Robertson, and Leonard McCombe were regular contributors. The magazine was owned by Edward G. Hulton.

The photographic archive for the Picture Post was initially sold to the BBC in 1957 and incorporated into the Radio Times photo archive. The expanded collection was sold to Brian Deutsch in 1988. In 1996, Getty Investments purchased the Hulton Picture Library.
