Elizabeth 'Liz' Taylor was an Academy Award-winning actress, who starred in a number of twentieth-century blockbusters, including National Velvet (1944), Cleopatra (1961), and Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf? (1966). She was also a prominent early activist in the fight against HIV/AIDS, co-founding the American Foundation for AIDS research in 1985. For this work and further philanthropy, she received the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2001, one of the highest civilian awards for American citizens.
