Samuel Anderson Vincent (b. 13 June 1909, d. 18 October 1976) was born in Belfast and was educated at Roseland Preparatory School and the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. He completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB, BCh, BAO) degree at Queen’s University Belfast in 1933.
Vincent worked as a surgeon in England and Northern Ireland, with resident appointments at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading and the Tyrone County Hospital in Armagh. During the Second World War, Vincent served in the Royal Army Medical Corp as a Major. In 1946, he acquired specific surgical qualifications, becoming Member of The Royal College of Surgeons and Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons. Following the war, he was appointed surgeon to the Ulster Hospital for Women and Children and surgeon to Musgrove Park Hospital in Belfast.
In 1948, Vincent became a lecturer in anatomy at the University of Belfast, a post he would hold until 1974. He published papers on biomedical engineering and on electrical and other aspects of enuresis in childhood.
In 1960 and 1961 he patented different devices to treat urinary incontinence. Patent: 3,080,865: Device For Obviating Or Mitigating The Medical Condition Known As Incontinence Of Urine was patented in 1960 and became known as the ‘Vincent balloon’.
