The original plan in 1861 was to build a line from Craven Arms to Montgomery, eventually linking to mid-Wales and Shrewsbury, with a branch line from Lydham to Bishop's Castle however when money was tight it was decided to complete the Lydham and Bishop's Castle branch which was opened in 1865. It was forced to close in 1935 due to fiscal difficulties and the line was demolished in 1937.
