The company was formed in 1840 Northumberland as primarily a coal-carrying network linking collieries in Ashington, Seghill and Blyth to the river Tyne at Percy Main and later linked Tynemouth and Newcastle upon Tyne. It also ran a passenger service to Whitley Bay. It was absorbed by the North Eastern Railway in 1874
