Formed in 1892 after the merger of the Edison General Electric Company and the Thomson-Houston Electric Company; based in Schenectady, New York; Not to be confused with the British company General Electric Company (GEC); Thomas Edison brought together his various business interests in 1890 as Edison General Electric; concentrated on power generation and lighting, but also worked in fields of superchargers, jet engines and computing; RCA founded by GE in 1919 to develop radio, growing into an industrial giant in its own right; RCA re-acquired by GE in 1986 (see also General Electric Company Limited, based in UK)
