1839 to 1842 - Locomotive superintendent of the Sheffield & Rotherham Railway. 1839 - began the practice of fixing the boiler only at the smokebox end, thereby allowing for expansion. 1839 - invented a 'wedge' valve gear applied on a NMR locomotive. 1849 - established Dodds & Son, Holmes Engine & Railway Works, Rotherham.
