Brother of Frederick Clarke. Joined GWR as Chief Clerk to I.K. Brunel. Worked as Chieg Traffic superintendent for the GWR at Paddington in 1837. Left the GWR in 1850 to become the General manager of the Great Northern Railway. Was involved in the breaking up of the cartel invoved in the Euston confederacy.
