1627 - attained MA degree from Cambridge University without attending college. c. 1628 - invented and (possibly) built a machine employing the propulsive properties of steam. 1646 - became marquess on death of his father. 1648 - fled to France to escape Cromwell. 1652 - returned to England and was sent to the Tower. 1654 - released from the Tower.
