1843 - apprenticed as a lithographic draughtsman to Messrs Dickinson. 1846-1860 - exhibited over seventy miniatures at the Royal Academy. 1861 - abandoned miniature painting in favour of full-scale oil portraiture. 1870 - elected a member of the Royal Academy.
