Stanley was formed in 1920 by the amalgamation of Stanley's Bolt Manufactory, founded by Frederick Trent Stanley in 1843, and The Stanley Rule and Level Company, founded by Frederick's cousin, Henry Stanley, in 1857. In 1937 Stanley entered the UK marketplace, via the acquisition of J.A Chapman of Sheffield. Since then they have gone on to develop a huge international portfolio and own a variety of companies around the world.
