Apprenticed as a shipbuilder to William Pitcher of Northfleet. Joined his father's engineering business at Lambeth. 1827 - patented an improved oscillating steam engine. 1833 - elected a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. 1839 - along with Joshua Field, took out a patent for a double-cylinder marine engine.
