Authorised on 24 July 1851 and opened on 15 February 1853 for goods, and on 1 August for passengers. It was worked by the North London Railway to begin with, and by various others until leased jointly to the London & North Western Railway and London & South Western Railway in 1871. Depite this, it remained officially independent until it was vested in the London, Midland & Scottish at Grouping.
