c.1850 - Studied at the University of Königsberg;

1851 - apprenticed to the Parisian violin-maker, Vuillaume, showing an unusual aptitude for mechanical work;

1858 - he went into business as the designer and maker of acoustical apparatus, particularly well known for his tuning forks;

1868 - awarded an honorary PhD;
