By all accounts, John Cooke Bourne’s (1814–1896) artistic talents developed early — by the early 1830s he was already recognised as a highly proficient draughtsman. He created two series of lithographs which are remembered as some of the finest early artistic representations of the railways: A Series of Lithographic Drawings on the London and Birmingham Railway (1838) and History of the Great Western Railway (1846).
