Born Gwendolen Mary Darwin, the daughter of astronomer Sir George Howard Darwin (1845–1912), and the grandaughter of Charles Darwin (1809–1882). Raverat was married to French painter Jacques Raverat, and a member of the Bloomsbury Group. She attended the Slade School of Fine Art, and became an accomplished wood engraver.
