The Barry Railway Company was promoted by interests in coal mining and steel in the South Wales valleys. The railway was incorporated on 14 August 1884 and construction began the following year. Once completed, the main line ran from Barry to Trehafod with a number of branch line extending to places like Cadoxton and St Fagans. After grouping, in 1923, Barry Railway became a part of the Great Western Railway.
