Cintel was founded by John Logie Baird in 1927 as Baird Television Company. In 1940, its name changed to Cinema Television Ltd before being shortened to Cintel in 1958 when it was sold to the Rank Organisation. It specialised in the manufacture of cathode ray tubes, film and cinema lighting, and recording equipment, and then became a specialist in digital film recording.

In 1996, the company began to see decreasing sales. Cintel was eventually put into administration and then formally liquidated. In 2012, the company's assets and intellectual property were acquired by Blackmagic Design which saw the official end of the company.
