Felix Andries Vening Mienesz geophysicist and geodesist, born The Hague 30 July 1887; known for inventing a precise method of measuring gravity, which he perfected during experiments in submarines between 1923 and 1929; part-time professor in geodesy, cartography and geophysics at Utrecht University 1927; professor at the Delft University of Technology 1937; awarded the Howard N Potts Medal in 1936; served in Dutch ressistance during second world war; director of the KNMI (Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute) 1945 to 1951; retired 1957;
